The Koper Regional Museum was founded in 1911, a year after the successful exhibition entitled »THE FIRST ISTRAN DISTRICT EXHIBITION«, at which the cultural heritage of Istra was presented.

Today, the parent museal building presents an archeological collection and collections covering the history of culture, art and history of Istra from its very beginning to the end of the 19th century. In the pavilion along the Museum's lapidary, a collection of the recent history of the Southern Primorska region is presented, while at Gramsci Square an etnological collection is on permanent display.

Under the auspices of the Koper Regional Museum, the Tartini Memorial Room ha salso been opened.
